Aquatic Park needs Revitalization.

We are making it happen.

We have the Team.

Our coalition joins public, private and nonprofit entities to ensure this beloved place is fit for the 21st century. And our project team brings the right talent, skills, energy and experience.

We have the Partners.

Our community-led effort draws from public and private donations as well as participation of five City agencies and the National Park Service to ensure efforts are coordinated.

We have the Plan.

It’s a complex undertaking, so we are taking it one phase at a time. We will start with a big vision, and then follow our roadmap, project by project, to achieve that vision. Join us!

Project Roadmap

Big projects require imagination, collaboration, resources, and planning. Our roadmap for The Aquatic Park and Pier Project has a sound strategy backed by a schedule with key milestones.

Phase 1: Vision.

Our Vision Study engages the public to imagine the park’s full potential. What would make this place better? The study unites multiple landowners, city agencies, National Park Service and other stakeholders to coordinate activities, planning and resources to achieve that potential through a cohesive suite of discrete and collaborative projects.

Phase 2: Project - Pier Design & Engineering.

The Vision Study creates the context for the funding, redesigning and rebuilding of Aquatic Park and its iconic pier, a national historic landmark pedestrian promenade above San Francisco Bay and the project’s infrastructural backbone. Currently on life support, the Pier is a strong candidate for federal funding from the 2020 Great American Outdoors Act, which dedicates $9 billion over the next five years towards deferred maintenance in the National Park Service. We imagine the Pier as the backbone and the first of multiple, coordinated projects to improve this vital area of the City’s waterfront.

Phase 3: Other Park Programs & Project Improvements.

While Aquatic Park Pier is the first and most urgent improvement project arising from the Vision Study, it is not the only one. The Vision Study will conceive of ideas ideas for improving and expanding ways to further activate Aquatic Park and better connect it to Fort Mason, the adjoining national park, as well as to the city’s retail and residential areas in ways that are consistent with its historical and environmental roots and the public’s aspirations. Part of our work will be to define these projects and to develop public-private partnerships to help realize them. Projects are also contingent on funding, approvals and other considerations.

Phase 4: Construction.

Construction of improvements will follow funding, approvals and completion of a formal, detailed design process, above and beyond the Vision Study. Because there are likely to be multiple projects to realize the complete vision, construction will be an ongoing process. We anticipate implementation of physical improvements to support new or restored facilities as well as infrastructure improvements such as transit or connective links between Aquatic Park, Fort Mason and the rest of the city.
